Is Feeding Animals the right way to Attract Wildlife??

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

There are many ways to attract different forms of wildlife to your garden and backyard – planting the right plants, avaoiding common gardening mistakes etc.
You can read about most of it in our comprehensive eBook >Landscaping for Wildlife

The easiest way ( a little bit like cheating in the nicest possible way I think…) to attract wildlife is feeding the animals!
Obviously – birds are the most perceptive in this regard, and I will talk a bit more about that in a minute. But as you might know, some other animals are followers of our urban society and started making a living of our waste ( some kits have specialist cleaning suburban waste dumps, seagulls have been feeding of dumpsters for decades, racoons are breaking into our basements and coyotes and in some areas northern areas bears are coming dangerously close to breaking into our dwellings to eat what’s on offer.
So, by attracting wildlife, you have to be very sure which kind of animal you want to attract and make sure you don’t inadvertently attract dangerous ones as well.

Growing up I always loved going to my grandmother’s house, she always had those large tray type bird feeders. She loved birds that were for certain. But I think she needed to think of where she placed some of those trays. Birds will flock to them wherever they are and they don’t seem to care if people are there or not, at least not these birds. We were getting dive bombed any time the birds came by and saw us near their food. I don’t know if they actually thought we were smaller than them or not but they had guts.

When placing tray type bird feeders around your property you should always think about the location. If you have them too low to the ground, cats are bound to jump at every bird that flies over and if it is low enough they might jump on it. Squirrels seem to be another problem as they don’t need to jump, all they do is climb. In order to keep the squirrel’s away grandma would hand the tray type bird feeders from a very long string.

Keep in mind that while tray type bird feeders may be ideal to feed many birds at once they aren’t always protected. If you’ve got one that doesn’t have a house around it or a roof over it, when it rains the food will get ruined. For the sake of the birds you may want to have two platform bird feeders, as the bigger ones love bullying the little guys. You don’t want to see an injured bird in your yard when you could’ve protected it.

When it comes time to place the food in your tray type bird feeders, also known as platform feeders, think about what you want to attract to your yard. While most birds will come to store bought seeds and sunflowers, others will come to only certain types of foods. Birds love fruits as well and many people don’t ever think about leaving fruit inside bird feeders, but try it and see how many show up. Grapes and Raisins attract mockingbirds, bluebirds, waxwings and catbirds.
Woodpeckers, Tanagers, Finches and Robins have also been known to flock anywhere grapes are. You better be careful though if you didn’t plan on your grape vine getting picked apart.

Lets be honest – its a lot of fun to watch our little friends – so lets get going and start putting some feed out…

Useful Little Hints – Margarine is good for many things!

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Have you ever bought a new appliance and couldn’t get the factory sticker off?
It’s good to know you bought the one with the best water rating or energy rating, or even just the additional information the company wants everyone to see —however – it does not really look all the flash in your kitchen, livingroom or anywhere really in your house.

And here you are, carefully trying to peel the sticker off without leaving scratches : and it breaks – the glossy surface in your fingers you are left with the glue and a papery substance firmly stuck to your beautiful new item.

now what?? Well, before we go into all the great products you can try to clean the sticky mess up try this: Margarine ( or butter or even olive oil) !
It works a treat!! Really!
When my grandma first told me about 40 years ago I thought to myself: typical old wives tale!
And here I am , 40 years later and I have to admit that it reallys works best of all products I have tried over the years!

So – give it a try – you have nothing to loose – and you may safe some money, a lot of time and a lot of frustration!
Let me know if you have success or if you know of similar easy household tricks.

have a great day

Feng Shui is Vogue

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

MODERN TIMES
Feng Shui has experienced popularity in modern society. In the 1970’s
within the United States there was a surge of interest in ancient Chinese
methods and thought, and one of the theories to get recognized and utilized was
Feng Shui. Its popularity has grown throughout the years with a recent influx of
interest in Feng Shui as the term becomes more popular and familiar within
modern culture. Feng Shui has become so popular, as a matter of fact, that
some Americans have essentially created their own forms of Feng Shui and
turned it into either a religious idea or instead into a clever marketing ploy. Most
people who utilize Feng Shui within the United States do not get too terribly indepth
with the principles and instead simply use it as something they hope will
enhance their lives, yet they don’t put too much stock into it.

There are plenty of other people, however, who get quite serious when it comes to their Feng Shui and they do complex calculations in order to figure out the best placement of
everything within their home.

Yes, it’s vogue. People who have never dabbled in anything remotely exotic
may still develop an interest in Feng Shui for a few reasons.
There is also an abundance of information available about Feng Shui, so that makes it much easier for people to give it a try.
Feng Shui appeals to so many people because, although it’s still considered somewhat frivolous, it’s not generally considered pagan. In other words, although some religious groups frown upon the fundamental idea of Feng Shui (that you can somehow influence your environment through the layout of your surroundings), it isn’t necessarily likened
to devious behaviour. Consequently, many people who would never usually try
something like Feng Shui jump right in and try it. With enough famous and
influential people claiming that Feng Shui has been beneficial to their lives, it
makes other people want to give it a try. Besides, if a person’s favourite actor,
writer, or other celebrity declares Feng Shui to be a valid way to calm
surroundings, many people are more than willing to try it simply because it’s
trendy.
Everyone is looking for a way to make their homes more peaceful.
For many people, there is no way to actually lessen the busyness within their lives, so they instead turn to practices like Feng Shui, which are supposed to grant things like calm, harmony, and clarity without very much effort. Once you know the fundamentals of Feng Shui, it isn’t too hard to put them into practice.
Sometimes something as simple as moving some furniture around or changing the colour scheme of a room can help achieve a desired result.
Feng Shui offers a system that is relatively simple to follow and that claims to make a living space (or any other space for that matter) a nicer place to be.
With claims like these, it’s no wonder that people within modern
society are flocking toward Feng Shui and giving it a try. Feng Shui is being
used by people who come from families who have employed Feng Shui tactics
every generation for many years, but also by families who have no ties to
ancestors who ever would consider trying something like this. Some people are
attracted to the simplistic nature behind some Feng Shui principles. People who
can lose the clutter, take bulky electronics out of living areas, and simplify their
homes often find great relief from the process. If you are looking for something
to make your home more peaceful then Feng Shui might be worth a try. You
never know if you may get a fantastic result.

Monday, February 1st, 2010

You don’t need a lot of money or time to transform your garden.
Here are a few tips for adding decorative elements that will punch up your garden in a fast and easy way.
Purchase container or pots in variety of sizes. You can purchase coordinating pots, or you can decorate and paint your pots on your own. Choose a spot in your garden that looks drab and could stand from a facelift, and arrange your colourful containers in this area. Arrange the composition of your colourful container garden in way that is eye pleasing and easy to maintain.
Look Up – here’s a Hanging Container Garden
Hanging container plants add charm and interest to your garden. This is a great solution if you have only limited room for placing planters, pots or containers. Find a space where the hanging container will receive plenty of sun and where it will be easy to access for watering. Accentuate your hanging plant with wind chimes and other decorative elements, such as bird feeders and houses. These add charm to even the smallest gardens. – and attract wildlife . You might consider adding plants with lots of nectar to attract butterflies as well.
Add a Lawn Sculpture to Act as a Focal Point in Your Garden – turn a problem spot into a feature
If your lawn looks boring and sad, perhaps what you really need is a focal point. Choose a space in your garden or lawn that you think could stand from more attention. Perhaps there is an elevated spot garden or lawn that appears empty or like it is missing something. This is an ideal spot to draw attention. A garden sculpture is a great way to liven up a spot that could otherwise use some attention. You can build a cement or stone foundation, purchase a pedestal and have a sculpture installed. Once you have chosen the right sculpture, you will find that this is a great spot to plant flowers.

Create Your Own Garden Water Music
Water provides a soothing and pleasing ambience to any garden
Many gardeners swear that a garden is simply not complete without the sound of nature, or more specifically, the sound of water. It is a fun and easy way to liven up any garden.
There are many sources for pleasing garden water music. You can have a pond installed, or install one yourself. Budget , don’t panic over the holiday season

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Does the holiday season fill your heart with joy or do you go into a panic attack just thinking about the damage that it will do to your budget? If the holiday season has become something that you dread, it’s time to take control and put things into perspective. With mass consumerism and the pressure to spend during this time of year, it can be incredibly easy to throw caution to the wind and rack up a huge credit card bill that will come back to haunt you in the new year. This year, propose to approach the holiday season with your good sense intact. Here are some helpful hints on how to avoid the debt of the holiday season and enjoy a stress-free holiday.
Prepare a plan in advance of the holiday season
Take that old Boy Scout adage to heart when it comes to preparing yourself for the holiday season: be prepared. When the first strains of Christmas Carols come into earshot, grab a pen and sheet of paper and get ready to make a plan. You can try planning early, but it can be easy to forget about your fail-proof holiday season budgeting plan if you draft it in July. Around Thanksgiving, take a good hard look at your current financial template and figure out how much you can afford to spend on gifts, food, entertainment, travel and other seasonal expenses without going into the red. Make a list of everyone you plan on giving a gift to, including co-workers, the mail carrier, etc. It’s time to prioritize: who do you anticipate you will be spending more on? Write everyone’s name on a sheet of paper and put a figure next to their name. Add up all the numbers to make sure that your total figure is not beyond your budget.
Stick, stick, stick to your budget
You can make as many lists as you want but they won’t mean much if you don’t stick to a budget. It can be very tempting to overspend, especially if you happen to come upon the “perfect” gift for your wife, husband, girlfriend, boss, best friend, etc. No matter how perfect the gift may be, don’t buy it unless you can afford it. You won’t be doing your friends, family members and other loved ones any favors by getting into debt. Taking your budget plan to the store as you shop is an easy way to remind yourself not to overspend. Cross off names from your list after buying the corresponding gift or present. If you are buying many gifts, it can be very easy to overspend simply by buying too many presents and losing track of what you have purchased already.
Propose a cap on holiday spending
Chances are that you are not the only one in your family or circle of friends who overspends during the holiday season. If you are serious about spending within your means, discuss openly your concerns with friends and family members. Let them know that you will be setting a cap on your holiday setting, and that your friends and family members may want to consider reciprocating. If possible, get your family to agree on a spending cap. This will help ensure a financially healthy and low-stress holiday season for all your loved ones.
Make your own gifts
A lot of people appreciate the warmth and unique beauty of handmade gifts. If you are lucky enough to have friends and family members who favor handmade items over store bought presents, the holiday season can not only be a great time to save money but a wonderful opportunity to let your talents shine. Are you an expert syrup maker? Do you love to make candles or soaps in your spare time? These can make wonderful and low-cost presents.
